Chatting on Social Media

I really think that wave and the next generation will have a huge impact on the way things are done. But I feel there will be a period of trying everything before people settle down to decide what works best for them. As with other social media devices there is a time where we all sign up to everything to see what it’s like before any one before particularly prevelent or useful. A lot I think will depend on integration – when I update Twitter it sets up my blog and my Facebook account – that reverses for my Blog but I just can’t get to grips with Facebook’s interface – I don’t like it. However, do check out Microsoft’s Fishbowl app – which is very clever and provides and far nicer Facebook experience.

Take out the Trash!!

Get rid of the Clutter

One of the most common things that I come across when looking at so called “broken” PC’s is quite simply the amount of random crap scattered across it.  It seems that people will install anything they can get their hands on with out ever bothering to tidy up or checking what it does or even if they need it.  Soon they begin to notice that’s slowing down or the internet is slow – well you shouldn’t really have 50+ start-up applications should you!

Funnily enough they also run out of Disk space after having never cleaned out their cache , old files or recycle bin AAAAAAAARRRRRGH!

Apple Itouch Fix broken screen

Fix Itouch

Well I can honestly say that replacing the screen on the Apple Itouch 2G is possibly one of the scariest fixes yet.  I remember when I replaced my first stick of RAM and was suitably awed and scared by the amount of force required to get the clips to close – well this was another one of these moments.

The new screen / digitiser was £11.99 from an Ebay seller, nothing too amazing – simply the glass screen with a ribbon cable and plug at the top corner.  By far the scariest thing was sticking the plastic tool, a screwdriver and eventually a narrow wallpaper scraper into the side of the screen in an attempt to pop it out.  You have to work your way around the screen levering out the clips that sit along the edges – if the screen is shattered you’ll get shards of glass too which isn’t pleasant so be careful.

As you do pop out the frame you find that ribbon cable in the top left corner (with the device facing you) which you can gently lever out with the plastic tool or fine flat screwdriver.

What you find is that the glass screen (shattered in this case) is set in a thin plastic frame which also houses the menu/home button,  you need to keep this intact or have a new one when you replace the glass.  Not knowing this I removed the glass and the frame and then had to pick all the glass out from the frame (glued) which was fiddly as hell.  Once removed it wasn’t to difficult to stick the new glass into the frame threading the ribbon cable back through the frame so that the plug is below the frame as you fit it.

Clean the screen (the lcd) and the back of the glass digitiser at this point – once you’ve closed it you don’t want to have to open it again and you’ll probably break the glass!

Once the frame and glass are back together – the ribbon cable and plug are threaded then gently plug in the cable and switch on make sure that the digitiser works – simply touch the screen as you would usually but be very careful.  If all is good then continue  (you can switch of again but it’s not necessary at this point -I didn’t)

Starting from that top corner, ease the glass and frame back into the case applying pressure at the edges all round.  The action of fitting is similar to getting one of those annoying tupperware lids back on to an airtight container – don’t force the clips round the edge use a plastic tool or fine screwdriver to ease them back into position.

Clean the front / remove the acetate and turn it on again – woohoo!

I got my initial information from here – and worked on from that point.
