Apple Ipad or Microsoft Courier?

apple media pad itablet conceptMicrosoft Courier Booklet

The time is near, both the Ipad and the Courier will appear soon, two monoliths of techno power battling for the future of the mobile computing footprint. I have to say that I’m taken with both, I like the form factors for both devices from the previews, they both have great potential. For me it’s going to be the usability and practicality of the thing. I do like Apple for the input methods and ease of use, somewhere I think that Microsoft haven’t always hit on the head. Saying that however, some of the newer devices such as the Zune coupled with great online services from the Live community have been extremely good. So I’m split at the moment I guess price will be a huge factor along with the ease of use. I’m currently typing this on my iPod touch and I type faster on this than on even a conventional keyboard as I find it very intuitive, if the iPad can match this then they’ll be laughing. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Until then I’ll be looking to sell the old 17″ widescreen Hp laptop to raise funds, it was far too heavy to carry around anyway……

Motivation

One of the main issues that I have is a lack of focus, not concentration, I can do that well enough when required – but I don’t’ have the drive or the motivation. This comes really from the fact that I don’t really know what I want, I’ve generally wandered through my life taking the easy options and going along with things. I’ve rarely taken the initiative and this is due to not having a particular direction. This doesn’t mean I haven’t got anywhere, on the whole I do very well and this is due to a talent for being in the right place and getting the best from the opportunities that do come my way.

I’m embarking on a bit of a quest if you like to tease out what’s important to me, why it is so and hopefully from that derive better direction in my life. Something I need to do to make this happen is to write more, keep a diary and actually reflect on what I’ve thought and how I’ve felt about something rather than simply letting it pass. It’s a tough thing to do – there are lots of things I enjoy and many things I can do, it’s odd that I’ve never sat down and said “What do I want”? I know that to some people this kind of thinking is totally alien as they have a very good idea what they want from life and spend their time achieving it. Well I achieve just fine, I’m too laid back with some things and I don’t take some opportunities that i should. So I’m going to give it a try and see if I can figure it out. Sounds all very positive and determined, I have an idea on where to start so here goes…

How ‘Metal’ is that?

Addiction to heavy metal
A man in Sweden has been awarded disability benefits for his addiction to heavy metal. It means he’s also allowed to mosh along at work and take time off to go head banging at gigs.
Roger Tullegen struggled for nearly ten years to have his addiction officially recognised: “I spoke to three psychologists and they finally agreed that I needed this to avoid being discriminated against.”

Climate change

So apparently this theory of climate change has been debunked, people have lost faith in it and people are no longer looking in that direction.
I have to say, in my little educated opinion that this makes absolutely no bloody difference. They missed the point from the start!
So here’s a ramble for you with two main points, firstly global warming as a trend has been happening for a long time slowly and gradually with peaks and troughs in temperature for millions of years. If you want proof of this, look outside – any glaciers? ( ok for some of you reading this that might be true) but in general we’re no longer in an ice age. So things have warmed up, I’ll leave it to the nitpickers to decide if we’ve had a statistically significant effect. This may be the first time that humans as a species have tried to measure it, but it’s nothing new. Which brings me neatly to my second point, since this is going to continue anyway, how are we going to deal with it? What plans do we need to put in place to live with a changing climate and the more chaotic weather events we are seeing and will see in the future? There appears to be a lot of talk about ‘reversing’ global warming – total idiocy! – you’re trying to reverse a natural process, why not try to nail the tectonic plates in place while you’re at it. Don’t get me wrong I totally agree and back the plans to reduce polluting materials into the environment, recycle more and become far more efficient and planet friendly with our generation and use of energy. To me that’s common sense, we shouldn’t destroy the beauty and natural resources of the planet for economic and political gain. Now I realise that’s idealistic and possibly nieve but the truth is that we do need to find better and cleaner ways to generate power because fossil fuels are getting too expensive in their economic and human costs.
I don’t know if anyone will read this and it’s only my idealistic opinion but to quote a certain US Governor “Stop whining!” let’s plan to live on the planet rather than planning to change it, which at the end of the day simply won’t work.
